Coaching Carousel: Lamont Smith, Matthew Graves, GG Smith out

The last 24 hours have seen a lot of action on the college basketball coaching carousel, still several days away from the annual “Black Monday.” The big news on Thursday was Pitt’s announcement to fire Kevin Stallings after just two seasons. Here’s a look at some other coaches who have recently found themselves out of a job:

• Matthew Graves (South Alabama): Graves has been fired after five seasons at the helm of the Jaguars program. Unable to finish any of those seasons with a winning record, Graves’ final record stands at 65-96 (36-58 Sun Belt). Graves had most of his playing and all of his coaching career at Butler prior to arrival at USA: He played for Barry Collier and coached under Thad Matta, Todd Lickliter and Brad Stevens.
• G.G. Smith (Loyola (MD)): Smith, the oldest son of future Hall of Famer Tubby Smith, has resigned his position as head coach of the Greyhounds after five lackluster seasons. Smith’s team appeared in the CBI a year ago, but never finished at or above .500 during his tenure. Before getting the head gig, Smith spent six seasons as an assistant under Jimmy Patsos at the school.
• Lamont Smith (San Diego): Ten days after being arrested at Oakland International Airport, Lamont Smith has resigned his position as Torero’s head coach. No charges were filed in the matter. Smith played at USD and had just finished his first winning season as head coach in his third year at the job.
