  • Father, Don Monson, was head coach at both Idaho and Oregon
  • Started coaching with two seasons as a graduate assistant at UAB under head coach Gene Bartow
  • Spent nine seasons at Gonzaga as an assistant under Dan Fitzgerald before taking over as Zags head coach in 1997
  • Won the WCC regular season in each of his two seasons as Gonzaga head coach and went to the 1999 NCAA Elite Eight
  • Was head coach at Minnesota for eight seasons, going to one NCAA Tournament and four NITs during his tenure
    • Accepted an offer to be the head coach at Washington in 2002 before being convinced to stay at Minnesota
  • Resigned from UM after a 2-5 start to the 2006-07; following that season, was hired at Long Beach State
