  • Alma Mater: Hamilton College (BA, 1992) / University of San Diego (M.Ed, 1994)
  • Spent eight years as an assistant at San Diego – two under Hank Egan and six under Brad Holland
  • Also worked an as assistant for one season for head coach Joe Scott at Air Force
  • Was an assistant to Randy Bennett at Saint Mary’s for nine seasons before becoming Columbia’s head coach
  • Hired to be the next head coach at San Francisco following that season
    • Led the Dons to back-to-back CBI appearances in his first two seasons at the helm; finished as runner-up in 2018
  • Left in March 2019 to become the new head coach at Washington State
    • Went 94-71 through five seasons at the helm; in 2022, led the Cougars to the NIT Semifinals and then in 2024 got the program back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2008 (and the first of Smith’s career)
  • In March 2024, Smith was hired to be the new head coach at Stanford ahead of the program’s move to the ACC
