  • Was a graduate assistant at Western Illinois for one season under head coach Jack Margenthaler
  • Became a full-time assistant in 1986, spending one year under Ted Owens at Oral Roberts
    • Worked for two years as an assistant coach with the Fresno Flames of the professional World Basketball League (WBL)
  • Spent six seasons as an assistant under head coach Bob Bender – three at Illinois State and three at Washington
  • Was head coach for three seasons at North Dakota State while the program was at the Division II level, going 48-33 overall
  • Joined the Division I head coaching ranks in 2000, leading the Eastern Washington program for four seasons
    • Reached the NIT in 2003 and NCAA Tournament in 2004
  • Took over at Utah in 2004, leading the Utes to a MWC title and Sweet Sixteen appearance in his first season there
  • Between head coaching positions, spent six seasons on Mark Few‘s staff at Gonzaga
  • Was the head coach at Drake from 2013 to December 2016, when he resigned eight games into the 2016-17 with a .317 winning percentage at the school
  • Hired in October 2019 to be a special assistant to Travis Ford at Saint Louis
    • Announced his retirement in June 2022 after 38 three seasons at SLU and 38 seasons overall in coaching
