  • Alma Mater: Azusa Pacific University (BA, 1998) / Concordia University (MA)
  • Born in Oregon and raised in California, Newman started his collegiate career at West Valley CC (CA), where he played two seasons for Bob Burton
    • Transferred to Southern Utah, then a D-I Independent, for his junior year, starting 25 games for the Thunderbirds and head coach Bill Evans
    • Returned to California to play his senior season for coach Bill Odell at Azusa Pacific; the team went 34-5 and reached the NAIA Final Four
  • Started out his coaching career as an assistant to Stephen French at NAIA Vanguard (CA), then returned to West Valley CC where he worked under his former coach Bob Burton for two seasons
  • First D-I job was as coordinator of basketball operations for Ray Lopes at Fresno State, where Burton had gone to be an assistant coach
  • Burton was hired at Cal State Fullerton in 2003 and he brought Newman along as one of his assistant coaches; Newman was elevated to associate head coach prior to the 2007-08 season
    • In nine seasons on staff, Newman was part of one NCAA Tournament, one NIT, one Big West title and one Big West Tournament title
    • Elevated to interim head coach in 2012 following Burton’s resignation; he went 14-18 in his lone season but was not retained
  • Hired in 2013 to be the head coach at D-II Texas Permian Basin; went 100-50 overall in five seasons with the program
    • Built UTPB up from middle of the road to back-to-back NCAA Tournament bids and one Lone Star Conference title (2017); his 2017-18 team reached the NCAA D-II Sweet Sixteen
  • Returned to California in 2018 to be the new head coach at D-II Cal State San Bernardino
    • Went 91-30 through four seasons at the helm (2020-21 season was cancelled) and has won two-straight CCCA titles
    • His 2022-23 team finished 31-4 and made a run all the way to the D-II NCAA Final Four
  • Hired in April 2023 as head coach at D-I Cal State Northridge; new CSUN AD Shawn Chin-Farrell was previously the AD who hired Newman at CSUSB
