Cal hiring assistant Wyking Jones as next head coach

Cal assistant Wyking Jones has been promoted to head coach after two years on the staff under Cuonzo Martin. This is the first collegiate head coaching position for Jones, an Inglewood, CA native and former LMU player.

A number of external candidates were considered at Cal, including Nevada’s Eric Musselman and Montana’s Travis DeCuire.

“We conducted a thorough search, looking near and far and talking to people all around the country,” AD Mike Williams said Friday in a statement. “Ultimately, we came back to where we started and found what we wanted right here in Berkeley.”

In addition to two seasons at Cal, Jones spent five seasons on Rick Pitino‘s staff at Louisville. He has also coached at New Mexico, Pepperdine and his alma mater LMU.
