The stage of FIFA Club World Cup is where the world’s best in football fight it out, but this year one team placed themselves on the global map for reasons larger than mere headlines. Auckland FC, ranked 5,074 in the world, got thrashed 10-0 by Bayern Munich in their first match. There is, however, a tale larger than digit on a score sheet—of pride, resolve, and acerbic football despair.

How Auckland FC became world’s largest club competition dark horse contender

The journey of Auckland FC into the Club World Cup is one of extremes. It is from New Zealand, a nation in which football is a second-tier sport, that Auckland FC emerged victorious in a high-grade OFC Champions League. Auckland players are mostly amateur professionals with most having full-time jobs besides football, South China Morning Post says. They have earned their place through a lot of sweat and the fact that they are in the tournament shows just how widespread the popularity of the game is worldwide.

Though they were the world’s 5,074th team, Auckland FC found themselves standing face to face with the world’s best and strongest teams. The Roar called their meeting a “$1.5 billion mismatch” because of the massive difference when it comes to experience and fiscal factors. But for Auckland FC, just getting to play on this stage was like a dream come true for them.

This is how Auckland players and fans welcomed the challenge regardless of the odds; The team’s spirit was undaunted by the daunting task ahead. As one Auckland player told the South China Morning Post,

“We’re proud to be here, no matter the result.”

The 10-0 thrashing: What it was like on the pitch, and why it matters

The first game played by the Auckland FC was so easy to be organized as a park excursion. They were outclassed in every aspect, playing against Bayern Munich, giant of German clubs. The goal scoring of Bayern was merciless as almost all the Bayern players found a place on the score board and the team was showing why they were among the best teams in the world.

The defeat however did not crush the spirit of Auckland. The Roar described the way the goals kept coming as the team simply did not stop running and did not stop trying. They considered having been in the same field with great talents across the world as a milestone in their career. Although humbling, the experience was elevating as well. The sporting fraternity responded similarly on the same lines of honor and condolence. The tweets were all over solidarity with Auckland, saying how strong they were and how high the performance in sports they boasted.

Beyond the outcome: Why Auckland FC’s tale tells so much more than New Zealand

It’s one of hope, of will, and the force of dreams. The unadulterated grit of the club for wanting to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles has served to inspire hundreds of thousands of people all over the world with hope and has reminded us all that sport itself is not won, but played.

As South China Morning Post so beautifully put it, “Auckland may have lost 10-0, but they won the respect of the football world.”

Their epic is an underdog’s epic, and that any team, no matter how ‘alien’ their tale, deserves to be heard on the international stage. Auckland FC’s epic shows that football is bigger than a winning concept. No matter the scoreboard, they demonstrated that true victory is having the capacity to stand proud and keep your head held high playing for your society with dignity and never lose sight of your objectives.
