Barret Peery leaving Portland State to join Texas Tech staff

Barret Peery is leaving Portland State, where he has been the head coach since 2017, to join Mark Adams‘ staff at Texas Tech. Peery was 63-57 with the Vikings and took the program to the CIT in 2018.

Peery arrived in Portland after two seasons working under Herb Sendek, one each at Santa Clara and Arizona State.

Adams seems to be taking a page from Chris Beard‘s playbook, as the latter has already pulled Chris Ogden and Rodney Terry away from head coaching gigs to join his staff at Texas. A Texas Tech assistant job undoubtedly pays more than a Big Sky head coach can make and allows Peery a more clear path to the NCAA Tournament and the opportunity to improve his resume for future head coaching opportunities.
