- Hometown: Marlow, Oklahoma
- Alma Mater: Oklahoma State University (BA, 1983)
- Started his coaching career in Oklahoma, becoming the head coach at Bishop Kelley HS in 1987 following a year each as an assistant at Stillwater HS and Edmond Memorial HS
- After 6 season as the Bishop Kelley head coach, Hinson took a job as an assistant to new Oral Roberts head coach Bill Self
- Was the head coach at Oral Roberts for two seasons; won a share of the Summit League regular season title in 1999
- Became the head coach at Missouri State (then Southwest Missouri State) in 1999
- Coached the Bears for nine seasons and reaching the NIT four times in that span
- Reunited with Bill Self in 2008 at Kansas as the Jayhawks’ Director of External Relations
- After two years, became the Director of Men’s Basketball Operations from 2010-2012
- Returned to the Missouri Valley in 2012 by accepting the position of head coach at Southern Illinois
- Honored as Missouri Valley Coach of the Year in 2016 after leading the Salukis to a 22-10 overall record, the program’s first 20+ win season since 2006-07
- Resigned in March 2019 after failing to reach the postseason for the 7th straight season
- Joined the staff at alma mater as an analyst for head coach Mike Boynton‘s at OSU in October 2019
- Along with his wife, Angie, has two daughters and one grandson
