Preview: Best Point Guards in College Basketball 2022-23

Point guards play a vital role in basketball teams, creating chances for others and generally being among the best players for handling the ball securely.

Antoine Davis – Detroit Mercy

Davis was born in Indiana and his father is respected basketball coach Mike Davis. He’s been playing the sport since the age of 12, initially representing the Homeschool Christian Youth Association while getting homeschooled.

He was a standout for the Houston Hoops but a relative lack of height and weight meant that he was classed as a three-star recruit. Davis didn’t get any offers from the major college basketball programs but ended up going to Detroit Mercy when his father went there as head coach.

His college career got off to a strong start with good scoring performances in his early performances for Detroit. A total of 132 three-pointers in his freshman season set a new record, with a season total of 784 points.

Jahvon Quinerly – Alabama

Jahvon Quinerly was a consensus five-star recruit at Hudson Catholic Regional High School and earned consecutive Gatorade New Jersey Boys Basketball Player of the Year awards before joining the Crimson Tide for his college career.

There was a whiff of controversy about his move to Arizona to play college basketball, which eventually led to the move falling through and a search for a new team. In fact, he went to Villanova for his freshman season and was regarded as being their best recruit for the 2018 class.

Quinerly’s time at Villanova wasn’t a great success and he left for Alabama after just a year, but had to sit out the first year there due to the league’s transfer rules. Among his best moments since joining his new team. he was named as the SEC Tournament MVP, as well as posting career-high numbers on several occasions.

Andrè Curbelo – St. John’s Red Storm

Born in Puerto Rico, this young point guard has already represented the Puerto Rican national team as well as making a big impression in the college leagues. Curbelo has been playing the game since he was four years old and moved to New York at the age of 13.

Despite not speaking a lot of English, he settled into his new life in the US and performed well for the Long Island Lutheran Middle and High School. His spell there included the school winning their first Federation Tournament and Champions, while he also got picked for the World Select Team during the Nike Hoop Summit.

Classed as a four-star recruit, Curbelo chose the Illinois Fighting Illini before making the move back East to St. John’s Red Storm. His numbers for points and assists have been solid for both teams and there’s no doubt that NBA scouts will be keeping a close eye on his progress to see if he can step up another level.

Kendric Davis – Memphis

Davis got his start at the Sam Houston Math, Science, and Technology Center in Houston, where he averaged 22.6 points plus 6.6 assists during his senior year. A sought-after four-star recruit, the young point guard chose to play for the TCU Horned Frogs when making the step up to the college leagues.

A move to the SMU Mustangs appears to have been at least partly fueled by the desire to play a more prominent role with more minutes on the court. He set a new AAC record in 2021 by recording 14 assists and 14 points in a single game.

Since then, Davis has been awarded the title of American Athletic Conference Player of the Year for the 2021-22 season and was named in the 2022 NBA draft before pulling out and confirming his intention to carry on playing college basketball for the Memphis Tigers.

Max Abmas – Oral Roberts

Now rated as one of the most promising players in college basketball, Max Abmas started with his varsity team at the Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas. When the time came to make the move up to college, he chose Oral Roberts from a few offers he had received from around the country.

Abmas soon became a regular starter and started racking up impressive points average (14.4 ppg). He earned the title of the Summit League Player of the Year for the 2020-21 season and impressed at the NCAA Tournament by scoring 25 points or more in each of the first three games.

This point guard was listed for the 2022 NBA draft and was expected to make the move to the pro game. However, he then withdrew from the draft to commit himself to a fourth season at Oral Roberts before switching to pro basketball.
