Biff Poggi fired after less than two seasons at Charlotte
Biff Poggi has been fired as Charlotte head football coach, the school announced on Monday. Poggi went 6-16 (4-10 AAC) overall in just shy of two seasons at the helm.
“I am thankful to Biff Poggi for his leadership and mentorship of our student-athletes over these past two seasons,” said AD Mike Hill. “No one can question Biff’s passion for helping young people succeed in life, both personally and professionally, but our on-field results have unfortunately fallen short of everyone’s expectations. As we move forward into the next chapter of Charlotte 49er Football, we will be looking for a leader to take our program to the next level as a consistent bowl and championship contender.”
Poggi was an outside-the-box hire two years ago, having spent most of his career coaching at private schools in his native Baltimore. His only collegiate experience came at Michigan, where he was an analyst in 2016 and an associate head coach in 2022 and 2023.
Assistant head coach Tim Brewster will lead the 49ers as interim head coach for the next two weeks. Brewster previously spent four seasons as the head coach at Minnesota and joined the Charlotte staff this season after two years working under Deion Sanders at Jackson State and Colorado. The 49ers travel to Florida Atlantic this weekend and then host UAB to close out the season.
