  • Hometown: Port Washington, Ohio
  • Born in Morgantown, West Virginia
  • Alma Mater: West Virginia University (BA, 1977 & MA, 1978)
  • A coach’s son, Huggins played for his father at Indian Valley South HS (OH) before starting his collegiate career at Ohio U
    • Transferred to WVU after his freshman year, playing two seasons for head coach Joedy Gardner
  • Started coaching at WVU under Gardner in 1977, then spent two seasons as an assistant at Ohio State under Eldon Miller
  • Was the head coach for three seasons at D-II Walsh College, going 71-26 overall during that time, including a 34-1 record in 1982-83 (30-0 regular season)
  • Spent one season as an assistant under Chuck Machock at UCF before landing the head job at Akron in 1984
  • Was head coach at Akron for five years, winning 97 games and going to the NCAA Tournament in 1986 after winning OVC regular season and Tournament titles
  • Became the head coach at Cincinnati in 1989, coaching there for 16 seasons
    • Went to the NIT in each of his first two seasons, then led the Bearcats to 14 straight NCAA Tournament appearances (including the 1992 Final Four)
    • Resigned in 2005 after a DUI arrest in 2004 and the arrest of one of his assistants and several players the following year
  • Was hired in March 2006 to be the head coach at Kansas State; led the Wildcats to a 23-12 record and NIT appearance in his only year at KSU
  • Had the opportunity to become head coach at alma mater West Virginia and was officially hired in April 2007
  • Along with his wife, June, has two daughters
