- Alma Mater: San José State University (BA, 1976)
- Started his coaching career at the prep level in California, with positions at San Lorenzo Valley HS and Santa Cruz HS
- Spent four seasons, in two separate stints, as the head coach at Cabrillo College in Aptos, CA
- In between stints at Cabrillo, Williams was head coach for one year at Lincoln HS in San José
- Was the head coach for five seasons at Menlo College Atherton, CA
- Spent two seasons as an assistant under Tom Asbury at Pepperdine in between head coaching jobs
- Hired in 1990 as the head coach at then-Division II UC Davis, where he coached the Aggies for eight seasons
- Reached the D-II NCAA Tournament in each of his final four seasons, winning the D-II National Championship in 1998
- Moved up to Division I in 1998, when he was hired as the head coach at UC Santa Barbara
- Coached the Gauchos for 19 seasons, going 313-260 during that time
- Went to the NCAA Tournament three times, two NITs, one CBI, one CIT and the inaugural Vegas 16
- Won 20+ games five times, finishing at .500 or above in 15 of 19 seasons
- Fired in March 2017 following a 6-22 season, his only single-digit win season at UCSB
