- Wright played at Marshall for long-time head coach Cam Henderson; named Outstanding Athlete at Marshall as a senior
- Joined the United States Navy after graduating and before getting into his basketball coaching career
- Served for many years as a high school coach, including a highly successful five-year tenure at Ashland HS (KY)
- Wright went 168-29 overall and won a Kentucky state title with Ashland in 1961
- Hired in 1965 to be the head coach at Morehead State, leading the Eagles for four seasons
- Went 58-38 overall, highlighted by an 18-9 record and a share of the Ohio Valley title in his fourth year
- Left coaching and spent the rest of his career working in education
- Passed away in 2012 at the age of 86 in Pikeville, KY
