- Hometown: Binghamton, New York
- Alma Mater: State University College at Buffalo (BA, 1986)
- Played four seasons at Division III Buffalo State in his home state of New York
- Started his coaching career in 1986 at Broome CC (NY), then spent one year as an assistant under Dave Archer at Binghamton
- Then worked as an assistant at the prep level, first at St. Nicholas of Tolentine HS (Bronx, NY) then at Rice HS (Harlem, NY)
- Hired in 1993 to join Pete Gillen‘s staff at Xavier, following Gillen to Providence in 1994 and Virginia in 1998
- Worked under Gillen for a total of five seasons, during which time he was a part of one NCAA Tournament and three NITs
- Hired in 1999 as the head coach at Manhattan, leading the Jaspers for seven seasons
- Won 129 games and went to the postseason four times (two NCAA, two NIT)
- Claimed three MAAC regular season championships and two MAAC Tournament crowns
- Became the head coach at Seton Hall in 2006, a position he held for four seasons
- Finished above .500 in three of the four years, reaching the NIT in 2010
- Gonzalez was fired in March 2010, despite the gradual on-court improvements
- Since 2010, Gonzalez has worked as an NBA scout, motivational speaker, TV/radio analyst and basketball consultant
