- Father is Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley, Sr., who has led the St. Anthony HS program in Jersey City since 1972
- Played for his father from 1985-1989, winning four-straight New Jersey state titles
- Younger brother Dan Hurley is the head coach at Connecticut (previously at Rhode Island, Wagner)
- Played four years at Duke under legendary head coach Mike Krzyzewski, winning 2x NCAA National Championships
- Honored as the NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player in 1992
- Was named a consensus first-team All-American as a Duke senior in 1993
- Started his coaching career in 2010 as an assistant for his brother Dan at Wagner
- Followed Dan to Rhode Island a year later, serving as associate head coach for one season
- Hired as head coach at Buffalo in March 2013; led the Bulls to a MAC sweep and NCAA berth in his second season
- Named the new head coach at Arizona State in April 2015
