- Alma Mater: DePauw University (BA, 1991) / University of Indianapolis (MA, 1994)
- Was a high school teammate of future National POY Calbert Cheaney at William Henry Harrison HS in Evansville, IN
- First coaching jobs were an assistant to Jim Crews at Evansville for one year and at Indianapolis under Royce Waltman for two
- Was an assistant for eight seasons at UNC Wilmington under head coach Jerry Wainwright before becoming head coach in 2002
- Led the Seahawks to two CAA titles and NCAA berths in his four seasons as head coach before leaving for Wright State in 2006
- Went 84-45 over four seasons at Wright State, including one Horizon title and a trip to the 2007 NCAA Tournament
- Became the head coach of the Clemson Tigers in March 2010; is 241-177 overall during his time with the Tigers
- Coached the Tigers to the NCAA Tournament in his first season as head coach, winning 22 games in the process
- Returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2018 following a 23-win season in which the Tigers finished tied for 3rd in the ACC and were ranked in the AP poll for the entire second half of the season
- Reached an agreement with the school in October 2021 on a contract extension through the 2025-26 season
- In 2023-24, Brownell led the Tigers back to the NCAA Tournament and reached the Elite Eight as a 6-seed
