- The NYC-native played for Jim McDermott at Iona and then started his coaching career in 1967 as the JV coach at Power Memorial Academy (NY)
- Elevated to head coach at PMA in 1970, winning two city championships in six years
- Left for Fordham in 1976, where he spent one year as an assistant under Dick Stewart; followed that with one season on Ray Carazo’s staff at Yale
- Spent six years at Syracuse as an assistant under Jim Boeheim, during which time the Orange went to four NCAA Tournaments (three Sweet 16s) and won one Big East title (1980)
- Hired in 1984 to be the head coach at Rhode Island, but went just 17-39 in two seasons at the helm
- Spent the rest of his coaching career at the professional level, mostly as an assistant coach
- Worked under head coaches Bob Hill (NYK), Rick Pitino (NYK), Chuck Daly (DET), Ron Rothstein (DET), Don Chaney (DET & NYK), Jeff Van Gundy (NYK), Isiah Thomas (IND), Paul Silas (CLE) and Stan Van Gundy (ORL & DET)
- Won two NBA Championships as a member of the Detroit Pistons coaching staff (1989 & 1990)
- Was the head coach of the Toronto Raptors for one season (21-61 overall) and later served as interim head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers for 18 games
- Brendan’s son, Michael Malone, was a long-time NBA assistant who has been head coach of the Denver Nuggets and Sacramento Kings
