Holy Cross head coach Brett Nelson fired after four seasons

Holy Cross head coach Brett Nelson is out after four seasons at the helm, the school announced on Friday. Nelson was 27-84 overall and never won more than 10 games in any single season.

“I want to thank Brett for his service and commitment to the College and our student-athletes over the last four seasons,” AD Kit Hughes said in a statement. “He led the program through the COVID-19 pandemic and his teams worked hard to represent the College in a first-class manner. That said, after much discussion and thoughtful evaluation of all areas of our program, I believe that a fresh start and new leadership is needed to move Crusader men’s basketball forward.”

Holy Cross has played in the NCAA Tournament just once (2016) since Ralph Willard stepped down in 2009, and is currently on a nine-year streak of sub-.500 records.

This is the fourth Patriot League head coaching job to open this month, following American, Army and Bucknell.
