- Alma Mater: Emporia State University (BA, 1998) / Pittsburg State University (MS, 2000)
- Played basketball at Allen County CC (KS) and at D-II Emporia State (KS), the latter under head coach Ron Slaymaker
- Started his coaching career as an assistant at Fort Scott CC (KS), with one of those years working under Chris Beard
- Spent four years as the head coach at Fort Scott, leaving with the fourth-most wins in program history
- After two seasons as an assistant at South Plains College (TX), Tanner joined Danny Kaspar‘s staff at Stephen F. Austin
- Worked at SFA for a total of seven seasons and was part of one NCAA Tournament, two NITs and four Southland titles
- Hired at Abilene Christian to be the associate head coach under Joe Golding; the program was just then transitioning to Division I
- Was on the staff at ACU for eight years, helping build the small program into a postseason regular
- The Wildcats went to the NCAA Tournament in 2019 and 2021, upsetting 4-seed Texas in the latter to reach the second round
- In April 2021, Golding left for UTEP and Tanner was elevated to head coach a day later; program moved to the WAC that same year
- Went 25-11 overall in his first season, which included a trip to the CBI semifinals
