- Born in Michigan and raised in Minnesota, Dutcher attended Jefferson HS (MN) and then the U of Minnesota
- Father is former Eastern Michigan and Minnesota head coach Jim Dutcher
- Started his coaching career while getting his masters at Illinois, working as a graduate assistant on Lou Henson‘s staff
- After two years assisting Jim Thorson at South Dakota State, Dutcher began his long-standing partnership with Steve Fisher
- Spent a total of 27 years working with Fisher, nine at Michigan and 18 at San Diego State
- Dutcher had been considered the head-coach-in-waiting at SDSU since 2011 and officially got the position following the retirement of Fisher in 2017
- Led the team to a MWC Tournament title and an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament in his first season
- Claimed back-to-back MWC regular season titles in 2020 and 2021, earning MWC COY honors both seasons
- Returned to the NCAA Tournament in both 2021 and 2022
- Along with his wife, Jan, has two daughters
