  • Hometown: Seat Pleasant, Maryland
  • Alma Mater: Rutgers University (BA, 1985)
  • The Maryland-native played four seasons at Rutgers for head coach Tom Young
  • Started his coaching career as a grad assistant at Rutgers under next head coach Craig Littlepage
  • Spent the next four years in various D-I programs, assisting Jim Larrañaga at Bowling Green, Ernie Nestor at George Mason and George Felton at South Carolina
  • Was an assistant for four seasons at Virginia under Jeff Jones, going to three NCAA Tournaments
  • Became the head coach at Loyola (MD) in 1994, leading the Greyhounds for three seasons
  • Left for Michigan in 1997, taking over for Steve Fisher as the Wolverines’ head coach
    • Went 25-9 in his first season and captured the first-ever Big Ten Tournament crown
    • However, all wins – including the BTT title and NCAA berth – were vacated from that season and the following season due to NCAA violations committed by Fisher and staff
      • Ellerbe and his staff were cleared of any wrongdoing by the NCAA
    • Ellerbe was let go in 2001 after going 10-18; his official record at Michigan is 25-59
  • Stayed out of coaching for a while, working in the private sector for the next eight years
  • Returned to the college ranks in 2009, spending one season on Karl Hobbs‘ staff at George Washington
  • Most recent gigs were a three-year stint with Oliver Purnell at DePaul (2010-13) and four with Todd Bozeman at Morgan State (2015-19)
  • Is married to Kimberly and has one daughter
