- Hometown: Rockville Centre, New York
- Alma Mater: Manhattan College (BA, 1971)
- Graduated from Saint Agnes School (NY) and played for head coach John Powers at Manhattan College
- Selected by the Cavaliers in the 5th round of the 1971 NBA Draft (69th overall)
- Instead of playing for Cleveland, Mahoney spent one season with the ABA’s New York Nets (coached by Lou Carnesecca)
- Hired in 1973 to be on Carnesecca’s staff at St. John’s, working as one of his assistants for five seasons
- Went to two NITs and three NCAA Tournaments during this first stint at the school
- Became the head coach at alma mater Manhattan in 1978, leading the Jaspers for three seasons
- Failed to win more than 6 games in any of those years, finishing 16-62 overall
- Returned to St. John’s after his firing in 1981, working for Carnesecca for another eleven years
- Part of ten more NCAA Tournaments (including a trip to the 1985 Final Four) and the 1989 NIT title
- Selected to replace Carnesecca in 1992, leading St. John’s to the NCAA Tournament and winning Big East COY honors
- Was 56-58 over four seasons, going to the NIT in 1995 but finishing below .500 in the other two seasons
- After his coaching career, Mahoney spent many years working in Alumni Relations at St. John’s University
