Bronco Mendenhall hired as head football coach at Utah State
Bronco Mendenhall has been officially hired as the next head football coach at Utah State. Mendenhall, 58, is a Utah-native and the former head coach at both BYU and Virginia. He spent the 2024 season at the helm at fellow MWC program New Mexico, leading the Lobos to a 5-7 record.
“Bronco is one of the most experienced coaches in college football. His leadership, proven track record, and deep understanding of the game make him the ideal choice to elevate our program,” AD Diana Sabau said. “Bronco’s success goes far beyond football. He has a deep connection and care for growing young men. His student-athletes are proven leaders. He has consistently built programs that emphasize character, discipline, and excellence in every aspect of their lives.”
Mendenhall graduated from American Fork HS (UT) and later played at Snow College (UT) and Oregon State before starting his coaching career as a GA at OSU in 1989. While at BYU, he led the Cougars to an overall 99-43 record with a bowl appearance in each of his eleven seasons as head coach (2005-15).
“My passion is developing young people and transforming football programs to reach their full potential,” Mendenhall said. “Utah State provides a great opportunity to do both and allows a family focus that is essential to me and Holly. We look forward to adding to Utah State’s rich tradition and striving for football excellence.”
The Aggies were led by interim head coach Nate Dreiling this year, going 4-8 (3-4 MWC). Before that, they went 23-17 over three seasons under head coach Blake Anderson.
An introductory press conference for Mendenhall will be held on campus on Monday.
