Bryan Harsin fired after less than two seasons at Auburn
Auburn announced on Monday that head football coach Bryan Harsin has been fired. Harsin went 9-12 (4-9) in less than two seasons at the helm, losing his sole bowl appearance (2021 Birmingham Bowl).
While his time at Auburn was short, there were many who believed that it was going to be even shorter. A mass exodus of players and coaches after last year’s 6-7 campaign raised a litany of red flags at Auburn and prompted the school to dig deeper into the program and its still new head coach.
Ultimately, former AD Allen Greene decided to keep Harsin but now, on the same day that news breaks that Auburn is planning to hire Mississippi State’s John Cohen as its new AD, Harsin is out and a new search will begin.
Harsin was hired after seven wildly successful years at his alma mater, Boise State, where he won 78% of his games and four times finished in the AP Top 25. His tenure started with a 12-2 (7-1) campaign in 2014 that ended with a win over Arizona in the Fiesta Bowl. Harsin will likely be a hot commodity for a new job, as the Auburn failure appears to be more of a poor fit for the Boise-native rather than anything else.
The 3-5 (1-4) Tigers are on a four-game losing streak and travel to Mississippi State on Saturday for the next SEC match-up. [UPDATE 6:30p EST]: former Auburn and NFL running back Carnell “Cadillac” Williams has been named the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Williams has been on the staff at his alma mater for the last four years, most recently working as RBs coach and recruiting coordinator for the Tigers.
