Buzz Williams officially accepts the Texas A&M job

It’s the news that college basketball fans have been expecting for weeks: Buzz Williams is leaving Virginia Tech to return to his home state as the head coach at Texas A&M. Williams’ Hokies were eliminated in the Sweet Sixteen last week and the conversation immediately turned to the head coach’s future. Wednesday it all became official.

“I am so humbled and honored to return home to Texas A&M, and proud to lead the Aggies,” Williams said in a TAMU press release. “This is our home, and we are ready to join with the 12th Man to win championships, graduate our players and represent this world-class university with integrity.”

This is the fourth head coaching stop for Williams, who also spent a year at New Orleans and six seasons at Marquette (with five NCAA Tournaments). He has been to the Big Dance eight times in twelve seasons a head coach, including a trip to the 2013 Elite Eight with Marquette.

“We kept our focus on finding an elite basketball coach, a developer of talent, a tremendous recruiter, a tireless worker and someone who fits Texas A&M,” AD Scott Woodward said. “Buzz Williams is all that and more. I have no doubt that Buzz will take our basketball program further than ever before and will make Aggies everywhere proud. It is an exciting day as we welcome Buzz and his family back to Aggieland.”

As for Virginia Tech, the job becomes the first (and potentially only) ACC gig to open this off-season. Early reports have pegged Seton Hall head coach Kevin Willard as being at the top of VT’s wish list. Other candidates include Cincinnati‘s Mick Cronin (also reportedly a candidate for UCLA), Wofford‘s Mike Young and UMBC‘s Ryan Odom.
