- Hometown: Winston-Salem, North Carolina
- Alma Mater: University of North Carolina at Asheville (BS, 1986) / Western Carolina University (M.Ed, 1990)
- Played for four years at UNC Asheville under long-time head coach Jerry Green
- Got into coaching as a graduate assistant, spending one season each at Western Carolina (under Dave Possinger) and Tulsa (under J. D. Barnett)
- Returned to his home state in 1990 to be an assistant coach under Kevin Eastman at UNC Wilmington
- Was at UNCW for three years; also an assistant at Radford (under Ron Bradley) and Washington State (under Eastman)
- Became a head coach in 1995, going 17-36 over two seasons with the Hampton Pirates
- Left in 1997 to become an assistant coach at Tennessee under his collegiate head coach, Jerry Green
- During their four years in Knoxville, Green and Samuels led the Vols to four-straight NCAA Tournament appearances
- When Green resigned in 2001, Samuels returned to Radford where he spent another year on Bradley’s staff
- Took over as the Highlanders’ head coach a year later, spending five seasons at the helm
- Was 58-87 overall, finishing above .500 just once (2005-06); decided to resign following the 2006-07 season
- Spent two years assisting Stan Heath at South Florida then two years as head coach at Hillsborough CC in Tampa, FL
- After a year as operations coordinator at Georgia (under head coach Mark Fox), Samuels was hired by Florida A&M
- Went just 17-71 in three seasons at the Rattlers’ head coach, winning 8 or less games each year
- Fired in March 2017 following a 7-23 (5-11) campaign, good for second-to-last in the MEAC
- Along with his wife, Beverlyn, has one daughter and one son
