The Canelo vs Crawford fight happening on September 13 is the talk of the town at the moment. First, it was about the dates moving; secondly, it was about not having a venue; and thirdly, it is so much of a big deal that it has to air on Netflix, now, there is money involved. A lot is going on. However, the noise is good, you know; it keeps everyone on their toes. They get to see the headlines and reposts on social media to understand how this is one of those big fights in the world of boxing. Canelo and Crawford are trending, and everyone is looking forward to this big day.
Modern boxing has changed a lot, and now this new initiative is raising questions
The clock is ticking, and for every day that passes, we are getting closer to the game of 2025. For modern boxing, legacy is important, but not as essential. You know, these days things have changed. Boxers used to bleed for the legacy; today, we see how fighters are veterans, icons, and champions, and with the help of social media, they have become celebrities in some manner and, of course, profits and monetization.
As we were looking forward to a clean battle, you know, between Canelo Alvarez and Canelo Alvarez, someone has come up with another initiative. A challenge that involves money to sort of push and stimulate a hunger within these players; however, many have been asking if it is necessary because these players already have the money; they are just after the championship to boost their ego and to maintain a legacy and reputation.
Six figures are in the bag to boost Canelo and Crawford’s fighting adrenaline
I knew it was a big deal of a fight, but not this much of a big deal. A man named Dana White, a promoter, has promised over six figures as a performance bonus. Both fighters are elite; in my opinion, they have good and strong fighting calibre. Crawford has never lost a battle, and Canelo is just a boxing legend. Two strong “bulls” are ready to take centre stage. At the New York Press Conference, Dana White said,
“The performance that night is going to be over six figures. We’re still talking about it. It’s going to be a big number for whoever wins the performance that bonus that night.”
Is this not going to put unnecessary pressure on the players and waste money?
First of all, these players already had their heads in the game in the most focused, innocent way and were just waiting for September 13; however, this has just played with their minds and could place unnecessary pressure on them. It is not organic; the promoters and organisers have a certain way they want these players to fight, and others have expressed that it is a waste of money. The bonus will do the following:
- Increase stoppages.
- It will be more about money and not an authentic fight, different from a fight like Jai Opetaia and Claudio Squeo’s fight.
The problem with this idea is that it is just about another money-making mechanism, and not for the belt or legacy. It is a problem when there is an orchestration and an expectation of how things should be done. Emotionally, the two players have been altered, and their view on the game has changed, including their fans. However, that does not take away from the fact that it is a fight to never miss. Apparently, it is to avoid “Tom-and-Jerry” fights in the ring, but Canelo and Crawford will never be those types of players. Save the date; the fight will be hosted at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
