- Born in Kentucky and raised in West Virginia, he played basketball at Richmond for three years for coach H. Lester Hooker
- Slone was an All-SoCon player as a senior in 1960
- Started his coaching career at the high school level in Virginia, with stints at Stafford Senior HS (1960-62) and Varina HS (1962-67)
- Moved on to the college game in 1967, spending two seasons as an assistant at William & Mary under Warren Mitchell and for one season at George Washington under Wayne Dobbs
- Elevated to head coach at GW in 1970, leading the Colonials to a 54-48 record over the next four seasons
- Returned to his alma mater Richmond in 1974 to be the new head coach of the Spiders
- Went just 43-63 in four seasons with only one winning record (15-11 in year three)
- Left coaching in 1978 and went to work at the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Virginia; retired in 1998
