Former Wake Forest head coach Carl Tacy passes away at age 86

Former Wake Forest head coach Carl Tacy has passed away at age 86. A member of the Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame, Tacy led the Demon Deacons to 222 wins and four NCAA Tournaments over his 13-year tenure at the helm (1972-85).

Dave Odom, a fellow former Wake head coach, started his career as one of Tacy’s assistants from 1976-79. Odom was part of one of Tacy’s two Elite Eight runs.

“In my opinion, he was never given the credit he deserved as a basketball coach,” Odom said in a statement. “He was a terrific tactician, teacher, and a fearless competitor who relished big games against the ACC’s best.”

Coach Tacy is survived by his wife Donnie, son Carl Tacy, Jr., and daughters Beth Tacy Kelly and Carla Tacy.
