  • Hometown: Francisco, North Carolina
  • Alma Mater: Appalachian State University (BA, 1952)
  • Played both baseball and basketball at Appalachian State, the latter under head coach Francis Hoover
    • Spent several years in the Cincinnati Reds organization before injuries ended his baseball career
  • Started coaching at the high school level, winning 224 games across eleven years with tenures at several schools in NC and VA
  • Joined William Matthews’ staff at Virginia Tech in 1963, stayed on for an additional three seasons under Howie Shannon
  • Became a head coach in 1967, taking over at College Division (D-II) Roanoke College (VA)
    • Won 133 games in six seasons, reaching four College Division (now D-II) Tournaments and winning the 1972 title
  • Left for Tulane in 1973, going 46-33 in three years as head coach and winning the Metro regular season title in 1976
  • Final coaching role was as the head coach at Virginia Tech, where he coached the Hokies for eleven seasons
    • Went to the NCAA Tournament four times, winning 213 games overall and winning the 1979 Metro Tournament
    • The program was charged with 12 major NCAA violations following the 1986-87 season
      • Although Moir was ultimately cleared of any wrongdoing, he resigned from his position during the off-season
  • Inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame (2000) and Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame (2006)
