Chris Ogden hired as Texas-Arlington head coach
Chris Ogden has been hired as the new head coach at Texas-Arlington, the school announced Friday. Ogden is a native of Seminole, TX and has spent nearly his entire career in the Lone Star State, most recently as an assistant under Chris Beard at Texas Tech.
Starting as a student assistant in 2003, Ogden spent 12 years total on the coaching staff at Texas under Rick Barnes – he also played for Barnes and recently spent one year with him at Tennessee before going to Texas Tech. That familiarity with the state and plethora of experience made Ogden an obvious candidate for a Division I job in the UT family.
The Arlington job opened in March with the surprising removal of long-time head coach (and alum) Scott Cross. The Mavericks are just one year removed from a Sun Belt regular season title and won 21 games in 2017-18. Ogden is stepping into a pretty good situation, where it seems that AD Jim Baker just wanted to change things up and make his own hire.
