Cuonzo Martin returning to Missouri State for second stint as head coach

Cuonzo Martin is returning to Missouri State, where he was previously head coach from 2008-11, to once again be the Bears’ head coach. Martin has served as head coach at Missouri, California and Tennessee since he left Springfield and has compiled a career head coaching record of 264-198 with four NCAA Tournament appearances.

“Zo is an experienced coach who has consistently won at the Division I level,” said AD Kyle Moats. “One of the things that stands out about him is that he really wants to be at Missouri State. He is respected both nationally and here in our community, and he brings instant credibility to our program. His track record with our donors, our fans and our students will make this an easy transition. In my opinion, there was not a better coach out there to lead our young men.”

Martin led the Bears to a CIT Championship in 2010 and then their first (and still only) Missouri Valley regular season title in 2011, earning a NIT bid and ultimately turning that success into the Tennessee job. He was 61-41 overall at Missouri State and would go on to take all three subsequent programs to the NCAA Tournament, including a trip to the Sweet Sixteen with the Vols in 2014.

Missouri State has planned a press conference to formally re-introduce Martin as head coach next Monday, 4/1.
