Dan Muller fired as Illinois State head coach [UPDATED]

[UPDATE 2/14/22]: Muller has made the decision to step down effective immediately, rather than finish out the season. Associate head coach Brian Jones will lead the Redbirds for the remainder of their 2021-22 slate.

Illinois State AD Kyle Brennan announced Sunday that Dan Muller will be fired as the head men’s basketball coach effective the end of this season.

“Announcing a head coaching change during a season is a difficult decision I don’t take lightly, especially with a coach who has given so much of his life to ISU and Redbird Athletics with integrity, passion and commitment,” Brennan said in a statement. “I believe this is what is best for our current student-athletes and the future of the program. We have not been performing at a consistent level and we have not seen the continued growth needed to get back into contention in the Missouri Valley Conference.”

Muller is 167-150 through nearly ten seasons with the program. He led the Redbirds to a share of the MVC title in 2017 but is now on his way to a third-straight losing season and a fifth-straight year with no postseason appearance.

ISU is currently 11-15 (4-9) after losing at Indiana State on Saturday. Muller will coach the team for the remaining five games on the schedule, plus the upcoming MVC Tournament (March 3-6).
