- Hometown: Aplington, Iowa
- Alma Mater: University of Northern Iowa (BA, 1998) / Creighton University (MS, 2000)
- Was a standout athlete at Aplington-Parkersburg HS; inducted into the IHSAA HOF in 2015
- Played at UNI under head coach Eldon Miller; twice named to the Academic All-MVC squad
- Moved on to Creighton after graduation, becoming a graduate assistant with the basketball team under head coach Dana Altman while earning his master’s degree in college counseling
- Became one of Altman‘s assistants in 2001, working with him for another nine years at Creighton
- Stayed on the Bluejays staff in 2010 when Altman left and was replaced by Greg McDermott; worked for McDermott for eight more seasons
- Hired in March 2018 to become the new head coach at Drake; went 150-55 over six seasons at the helm
- Won a share of the 2019 Missouri Valley title in his first season at Drake, earning MVC COY honors in the process
- Earned an at-large bid to the 2021 NCAA Tournament as an 11-seed, the first bid for the program since 2008
- Returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2023 and 2024 after winning back-to-back Missouri Valley Tournament crowns
- Left Drake in March 2024 to take over as the new head coach at West Virginia in the Big 12
