Dave Dickerson named head coach at USC Upstate
Former Ohio State assistant and Tulane head coach Dave Dickerson has been hired as the new head coach at USC Upstate. Dickerson spent the last year as a scout with the NBA’s Utah Jazz, but had been on Thad Matta’s staff at Ohio State for seven years prior.
A native of Olar, South Carolina, Dickerson is returning to the role of head coach eight years removed from his four-year stint at the helm at Tulane. Dickerson has an excellent coaching background, working under the likes of Matta and Gary Williams and playing for both Williams and Lefty Driesell at Maryland.
Dickerson replaces Kyle Perry, who was let go after going 7-25 in his lone year as head coach. Athletic Director Julio Freire was also fired.
The USC Upstate Spartans have not been to the NCAA Tournament since moving up to the Division I level in 2007. The program is exiting the Atlantic Sun this summer to join the Big South.
