Dave Schellhase Facts
- David Gene Schellhase, Jr.
- Born October 14, 1944
- Hometown: Evansville, Indiana
- Alma Mater: Purdue University (BA, 1966)
- After starring at North HS in Evansville, Schellhase went up to West Lafayette to play for the Purdue Boilermakers
- Played for head coaches Ray Eddy and George King; was a two-time AP All-American (Second team in 1965 and First team in 1966)
- Drafted 10th overall by the Chicago Bulls in the 1966 NBA Draft; played two seasons for the Bulls (the first two seasons in the franchise’s history) for head coach Johnny “Red” Kerr
- Selected by the Phoenix Suns in the 1968 NBA Expansion Draft but never played for the team
- Began his coaching career with a two-season stint on King‘s staff back at alma mater Purdue
- Became the head coach of D-II Moorhead State (now known as Minnesota State-Moorhead) in 1975
- Would coach the Dragons for a total of nineteen seasons over two separate stints, going 297-241 overall
- Won NSIC regular season titles in 1981 and 1982, was named NSIC COY in both of those seasons
- In between stints at Moorhead, Schellhase returned to his home state and served as the head coach at D-I Indiana State
- Did not have much success with the Sycamores, going just 37-48 in three seasons at the helm
- Later spent one season (2001-02) as the head boys’ basketball coach at Cannelton HS (IN)
- After ending his coaching career, Schellhase became Dean of Students at Logansport HS (IN) also taught Physical Education and Health
- Inducted into the Indiana Basketball HOF (1992), Purdue HOF (1996) and MSU-Moorhead HOF (2015)
