- Alma Mater: Saint Mary’s College (BA, 1989)
- Starred at Crenshaw HS in LA, winning two state championships during his three years there
- Went on to play for head coaches Bill Oates and Lynn Nance at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, CA
- Was a four-year starter and helped lead the Gaels to a berth in 1989 NCAA Tournament
- Inducted into the Saint Mary’s Athletic Hall of Fame (class of 2006)
- Started his coaching career as a graduate assistant under Nance at Washington
- After three seasons at Diablo Valley (CA), Carter spent two seasons on Steve Aggers‘ staff at Eastern Washington
- Returned to his alma mater in 1997, assisting David Bollwinkel for two seasons at SMC
- Arrived at Nevada in 1999, first as an assistant coach under Trent Johnson
- Stayed on board for new head coach Mark Fox in 2004 and was promoted a year later to associate head coach
- When Fox left for Georgia in 2009, Carter was elevated to head coach and led the program for six seasons
- Went 98-97 during that tenure, winning one WAC title (2012) and reaching the NIT twice (2010, 2012)
- Let go by Nevada in 2015, spending the next two seasons back at Saint Mary’s under head coach Randy Bennett
- Rejoined Fox in 2017, working as an assistant during Fox’s final season at Georgia
- Moved back West in 2018, joining Sam Scholl‘s staff at San Diego as lead assistant coach
- Spent four seasons (2020-24) on head coach Stan Johnson‘s staff at Loyola Marymount as an assistant
