Evansville-native David Ragland as new Purple Aces’ head coach

Butler assistant and Evansville-native David Ragland has been announced as the new head coach of the Purple Aces, the school announced on Tuesday. Ragland has been a D-I assistant for the last 12 years and also worked at the JUCO level, including two seasons as head coach at Vincennes (IN).

“As we moved through the search process for our new head men’s basketball coach, David Ragland separated himself from the other candidates and established himself as the clear choice to lead our program,” said AD Kenneth Siegfried. “David brings a pedigree that will help our program in every way while his familiarity with the Evansville community will help to reengage our supporters.”

Ragland was hired at Butler in 2021 after three seasons at Utah State. He was in line to continue with the Bulldogs under new head coach Thad Matta before accepting the UE job. He played two seasons at then D-II Southern Indiana, also located in Evansville.

“It is a dream come true to return home,” said Ragland. “Evansville is such a special place for my family and myself and the opportunity to come back to where it all started means the world. Growing up in the city, I understand what the Purple Aces program means to the community. From day one, I will work to establish a program that the entire University of Evansville campus community and the city of Evansville will be proud of. My family and I are excited to be home.”

The Aces have not been to the NCAA Tournament since 1999 and have compiled a 35-84 total record over the last five seasons.
