Derek Kellogg out after five seasons at LIU

News surfaced on Wednesday that LIU was planning to replace Derek Kellogg with former NBA player and Bronx-native Rod Strickland. The hiring of Strickland was announced on Thursday and while there does not seem to have been any actual announcement of Kellogg’s firing, it appears to be official now.

Kellogg went an even 74-74 with the program, hired in 2017 to be the head coach at LIU Brooklyn and transitioning to LIU with the school two years later. He went to the NCAA Tournament with the Blackbirds in 2018 after winning the NEC Tournament and just this past year had his best league finish yet (3rd), though the Sharks were not invited to the postseason.

Like Strickland, Kellogg is a member of the John Calipari coaching tree – having played for him at UMass and spending eight years as his assistant at Memphis. He and Strickland were actually both on the UM staff in 2007-08 when Derrick Rose and the Tigers finished as NCAA National Runner-Up (later vacated).

Kellogg later served as the head coach at his alma mater for nine seasons, leading the Minutemen to two NITs and one NCAA Tournament.
