- Was a star player at DeSales HS (NY) and started out at Genesee CC (NY) before finishing his career at Dominican College (NY)
- Started his coaching career as an assistant varsity coach and head JV coach at Turner-Carroll HS in Buffalo, NY
- Joined Jack Armstrong‘s staff at Niagara in 1994, kicking off a 27-year run as a Division I assistant coach
- Spent time working under Tony Barone at Texas A&M, Scott Thompson at Cornell, Jim Baron at both St. Bonaventure and Rhode Island, Dennis Felton at Georgia, Tom Parrotta at Canisius, Alan Major at Charlotte and Rick Barnes at Tennessee
- During his assistant career, Oliver was part of 4x NCAA Tournaments (including the Vols’ 2019 Sweet Sixteen) and 5x NITs
- In April 2021, Oliver was announced as the new head coach at East Tennessee State
- Oliver was let go after just two seasons, finishing with a 27-37 overall record
- The following month, he joined the staff at South Florida as an assistant under new head coach Amir Abdur-Rahim
