  • Richard James Davey, Dr.
  • Born April 5, 1942
  • Hometown: Ceres, California
  • Alma Mater: University of the Pacific (BA, 1964)
  • Born in San Francisco and raised outside of Modesto in Ceres, Davey spent his entire career in California
  • Played baseball and basketball at Pacific, the latter for head coaches Van Sweet (1960-63) and Dick Edwards (1963-64)
    • Played minor league baseball for several years in the San Francisco Giants farm system after graduation
  • Started his career at Leland HS in San Jose, where he was the head boys’ basketball coach for five seasons
  • Joined Edwards‘ staff at California in 1972, spending the next five seasons working with the Golden Bears
  • Arrived at Santa Clara in 1977 to be an assistant under Carroll Williams; would spend the next 30 years with the program
    • After 15 seasons on Williams‘ staff, Davey was elevated to head coach of the Broncos in 1992
    • Went 251-190 overall, coming out strong with three NCAA Tournaments and three WCC titles in his first five seasons
    • One reason for the early success was the recruitment and development of future Hall of Fame player Steve Nash
      • In 1993, Nash and the 15-seed Broncos pulled the upset over 2-seed Arizona (the second such upset in NCAA history)
    • Davey finished above .500 nine times and had four 20+ win seasons; named WCC COY four times including in 2007, his last year before retirement when he led the team to a 21-10 (10-4) record
    • Inducted into Santa Clara’s Bronco Bench Foundation Hall of Fame in 2016
  • Came out of retirement in 2008 to become the associate head coach at Stanford under Johnny Dawkins; held that title for four years
  • Along with his wife, Jeanne, has one son and one daughter
