- Has two brothers, former Texas State head coach Dennis Nutt and former SEC football coach Houston Nutt
- Played basketball at Oklahoma State from 1977-82 for head coaches Jim Killingsworth and Paul Hansen
- First coaching job was as an assistant at Stillwater HS (OK) located near the OSU campus
- Became an assistant with the Cowboys in 1985, spending one year each assisting Hansen and Leonard Hamilton
- Returned to his home state in 1987, assisting Nelson Catalina at Arkansas State for eight seasons
- Took over as the head coach of the Red Wolves’ in 1995, leading the program for the next 13 years
- Went 159-187 overall, not including 30 wins that were later vacated by the NCAA
- Reached the NCAA Tournament in 1999 and won the Sun Belt title in both 1998 and 2007
- Resigned after the 2007-08 season; later stated that he had only been offered a one-year extension by the school
- After a year off, Nutt was hired as the head coach at Southeast Missouri State in the OVC
- Was 80-108 in six seasons with the RedHawks, finishing above .500 just one time (2013-14)
- Fired in 2015 having never reached the postseason during his tenure
- Became Hamilton‘s video coordinator at Florida State in 2015, serving in that capacity for three seasons
- Hired by Corey Williams as an assistant at Stetson in 2018 and a year later joined Dennis Gates‘ staff at Cleveland State
- In January 2021, Nutt was hired to be the first head coach at Gaston College (NC); went 18-10 in his lone season
- Reunited with Gates in 2022, joining his coaching staff at Missouri as an assistant; role changed to senior advisor to Gates in 2024
