  • Hometown: New Haven, Connecticut
  • Alma Mater: University of Connecticut (BA, 1964)
  • Graduated from Wilbur Cross HS (CT) and then played at UConn for head coaches Hugh Greer and Fred Shabel
    • Was captain of the 1964 team and played a key role in their run to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight
    • Later named to the University of Connecticut All-Century Team
  • Started his coaching career with stints at South Catholic HS (Hartford, CT) and St. Paul Catholic HS (Bristol, CT)
  • Joined Dee Rowe’s coaching staff at UConn as an assistant in 1972, serving in that role for five years
  • Took over as head coach in 1977 and led the program for nine seasons
    • Went 139-114 overall, reaching the NCAA Tournament in 1979 followed by three-straight NITs
    • Was the Huskies’ head coach through the first years of the original Big East Conference
  • After stepping away from coaching in 1986, Perno worked as a radio broadcaster and also in the insurance industry
  • Became the associate AD at George Washington University in DC in 1997, working there until his retirement in 2011
    • Hired one of his former players, Karl Hobbs, to be the head coach at GW in 2001
  • Along with his wife, Cynthia, has a daughter, Holly, and two sons, Dom and Matt
