Drivers who own or have leased certain Nissan vehicles in the last 10 years may very well be able to receive up to $5,000 as per the class action lawsuit against automaker, Nissan. The class action lawsuit was the result of defective continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) found in certain Nissan models. Selected Nissan drivers may qualify for a payment, or they may receive a voucher toward a new vehicle should they meet the qualification criteria.

More about the lawsuit against Nissan

The Nissan models involved in this lawsuit are the 2015 to 2018 Nissan Murano models and the 2016 to 2018 Nissan Maxima models that featured CVTs that were said to be defective from the onset. Due to these faulty CVTs, poor performance and costly repairs resulted and most of the time well after the basic warranty had expired.

While Nissan has denied all wrongdoing, the automaker is in favor of settling the lawsuit. Nissan will not initiate a full recall of all these models but will in turn offer eligible claimants either a cash reimbursement or a vehicle voucher.

What can claimants receive as a result of this class action lawsuit?

Since Nissan will not be doing a car recall, they are offering all eligible claimants the chance to receive:

  • A warranty extension for the transmission assembly and all affected parts for 84 months or for 84,000 miles whichever comes first.
  • Reimbursement of $5,000 which will go towards repairs done outside of the original warranty window.
  • A $1,500 voucher that can be used to purchase a new Nissan or Infiniti for those who had two or more qualifying transmission replacements or repairs done.

All eligible claimants must submit a claim for reimbursement or for a voucher. Nissan drivers need to submit a claim as soon as possible as the deadline for submitting a claim is merely two days away.

Who will qualify for payment or for a voucher?

All current and former owners or lessees of the 2015 to 2018 Nissan Murano models or the 2016 to 2018 Nissan Maxima models that were equipped with a CVT will be eligible to submit a claim provided the model was purchased or leased prior to April 4, 2025.

The way claims should be submitted is as follows:

  • Claims submitted for reimbursement: For drivers who paid from their pockets to fix the CVT at a Nissan dealership. These claimants will receive the full amount.
  • Claims submitted for reimbursement of repairs done elsewhere: Drivers who had their repair work done at somewhere other than a Nissan dealership will still receive a reimbursement of up to $5,000.
  • Claims for vouchers: All drivers who incurred two or more repairs related to the CVT can choose between a $1,500 voucher toward a new Nissan or toward an Infiniti instead of opting for the reimbursement.

For this particular settlement agreement, either a voucher can be chosen or a reimbursement fee and not both. To be eligible for either the settlement agreement or the voucher, claimants should submit valid claims by July 3, 2025, and provide the necessary documentation detailing repair work. If the deadline to submit a claim expires, you will miss out entirely like the many claimants who missed out on the Enzo Biochem data breach settlement.

Added information about this settlement agreement

The final approval hearing is set to take place on July 18, 2025, giving Nissan owners a limited chance to either submit a claim for a reimbursement or voucher or to opt out completely. Claimants should submit a claim because although the reimbursement on offer will not cover the full loss incurred, it does offer Nissan drivers the chance to retrieve some of the money that was spent on repairs. Another settlement agreement that was as interesting as the Nissan settlement agreement was the class action lawsuit entitled Paperno, et al. v. Whirlpool Corp.

Disclaimer: You should not submit false or inflated claims under penalty of perjury, as class‑action claim forms historically required declarations signed “under penalty of perjury” to ensure authenticity. Submitting a fraudulent claim not only carries legal exposure—including potential civil and criminal sanctions—but also harms other eligible class members by diluting the available settlement pool.
