- Alma Mater: University of Kansas (BA, 1921)
- Played basketball, baseball and football at Kansas; played basketball for head coaches Phog Allen and W.O. Hamilton
- Became the head basketball and football coach at McPherson College (KS) in 1921
- Moved on to Washburn University in Topeka in 1923, spending four seasons as head basketball coach
- Went 52-13 overall, including a 15-0 mark during the 1924-25 season
- Also served as an assistant coach with the football program in 1923
- Became the head basketball coach at Northwestern in 1927, coaching the Wildcats for 23 seasons
- Was 236-203 over that tenure, winning two Big Ten regular season titles
- His 1930-31 squad was retroactively named the national champion by the Helms Foundation
- Returned to his alma mater in 1950 to serve Kansas’ athletic director (1950-63)
- Named athletic director-emeritus at Kansas in 1964 following his retirement
- Though he never coached in the NCAA Tournament, he was chairman of the NCAA Tournament Committee from 1947 to 1960
- Was a manager with Team USA’s gold medal-winning basketball team for the 1960 Olympics
- Inducted into the Naismith HOF in 1973 and the inaugural 2006 class of the College Basketball HOF
- Passed away in Lawrence, KS at the age 86; survived by his wife, Edna, and son, Arthur
