- Alma Mater: Lenoir–Rhyne University (BA, 1962) / Appalachian State University (MA)
- Played for head coach Billy Wells at (then NAIA) Lenoir-Rhyne, where he won two conference championships
- Inducted into the Lenoir-Rhyne Athletic Hall of Fame (class of 2004)
- Became the head coach at Gardner-Webb in 1964 when the program was still a junior college
- The school moved up to NAIA in 1968 and Holbrook went 212-39 in ten seasons at the NAIA level and went to the NAIA Tournament twice with the Bulldogs; he was 328-67 overall in fourteen seasons
- Coached five future NBA draftees, including Hall of Famer Artis Gilmore
- Inducted into the Gardner-Webb Hall of Fame in 1991 and had the court named after him in 2015
- Spent four seasons as the head coach at Furman at the Division I level, going 65-48 overall
- Highlighted by the 1980 team that went 23-7, won the SoCon title and SoCon Tournament and reaching the NCAA Tournament
- Returned to Gardner-Webb in 1993 and spent four years as Asst to the Pres/VP of Community Relations and Development
