To all the boxing enthusiasts, expect a great weekend ahead because two players will be causing a fire in the boxing ring. Taylor returns to the Glasgow ring against Ekow Essuman. For the past months, a lot has been said regarding the future of Josh Taylor and his career. He has been away for a year, and after his last match, which might have triggered his pride, a match against Teofimo Lopez, fans were left wondering if it would push him to throw in the towel and call it quits. In a sport where, if you do not make a comeback, your name is forgotten, the opposite happened for Taylor. The suspense and guessing are over.
After a full year away, Josh Taylor seems to have fuelled up
Before his return, the champion decided, at that point in his life, that it was time to hang up the gloves because of all his winnings and successes. He then decided to level up to a more challenging segment called the welterweight. After losing twice, he took time away, a well-needed break, to make a grand reappearance and to ensure that he is ready for anything.
Taylor’s time away was strategic. He wanted to be emotionally charged, career-critical, and loaded with expectation. He is regarded as one of the elite boxers, and that is why his name kept being whispered when he was away. He has always shown victory and even gained a nickname, “The Tartan Tornado”. However, this time around, he is back, stepping up to welterweight, wanting to prove himself.
Ekow Essuman will be Taylor’s opponent in a must-win game
Rumour was saying that Josh Taylor’s comeback will be soft and regular; however, you are talking of a person who does not believe in shortcuts. He is back with a bang! However, his opponent is not just a regular, too; he is known as “The Engine” and has amassed a 19-0 record with deliberate accuracy. He is thirsty for victory and power and will do anything in the fight to win. Two elite players coming against each other, it will be fascinating to watch.
Titled “The Land of the Brave”, at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro, is giving an intense energy between two British boys who fell in love with boxing and today will be opponents. Taylor wants to come back home and fix the mess, more like the prodigal son, while Essuman wants to ensure he gets the attention and victory and makes a big name for himself.
Can Taylor bring his career back to life, or will Essuman take centre stage?
Boxing News stated that,
“If Taylor is victorious against Essuman, he’s going to be in a position to get some bigger fights at welterweight against Conor Benn, Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney, and Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis. It’s doubtful that he’ll get any of those fights. It’ll require that Taylor beat someone decent like Karen Chukhadzhian, Eimantas Stanionis, Shakhram Giyasov, or Rohan Polanco to have a shot at those fighters.”
It is no longer a rumour: Taylor and Essuman are making it happen on May 24, 2025, and we are here to witness the two champions fight each other or fight for what they are craving. Essuman, at 36 years old, has proven to be consistent, and while others believe that Taylor might win or has more favour, it does not overshadow the fact that they are both great fighters and are willing to push against the odds to make it happen for themselves and their fans. Because of his one-year break, even if he wins, Josh will still need to fight more fights to get back on track and push his numbers up again.
