Deadline day in the EPL is always a sight to behold. For generations, the transfer deadline day has seen some spectacular signings and transfers. This year was to be a record-breaking year for the English Premier League. And it would appear that the majority of the spending was done by the big six clubs in England, with the overarching theme being finding that elusive striker that can deliver goals. For the past few years, the striker has become a position that clubs are not too concerned with. However, this year proved to be the year of the striker as several top clubs found new number 9s.

It was a record-breaking transfer window this year in England

The EPL clubs spent a mind-shattering £3 billion on new players this year. That’s billion with a B. The transfers of several top players to the top clubs in England can account for the majority of that spending. This year’s billion-pound spending spree eclipsed the previous record of £2.44bn set in 2023. The clubs that sold players made some serious money, as £1.8bn of that £3 billion came from clubs selling players.

Among the big spenders this year were the top clubs in England. This season’s transfer window was dominated by clubs searching for new strikers. Manchester City started the trend of spending big on strikers when they bought Erling Harlaand. And the rest of the big six followed suit this year, with several club records being broken by signing new stars.

Here is a look at the top signings and which of the English Premier League clubs spent the most money:

  • Alexander Isak to Liverpool – British-record £125 million
  • Florian Wirtz to Arsenal – £116.5 million
  • Hugo Ekitike to Liverpool – £79 million
  • Benjamin Sesko to Manchester United – £73.7 million
  • Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United – £71 million

Liverpool set a new English club record with Alexander Isak signing

The biggest spenders this season were Liverpool. They broke the record for an English club signing with their £125 million acquisition of Alexander Isak from Newcastle United. Couple that with the £79 million they spent on Hugo Ekitike, and one can understand why they are the champions of the EPL and are aiming to win the title this year as well.

Liverpool’s bitter rivals, Manchester United, also spent big in this transfer window. They brought in Benjamin Sesko(who was close to signing for several EPL clubs), Bryan Mbuemo from Brentford, and Mathues Cunha. All that spending has not produced results for the Red Devils. They only got their first three points of the season recently at a closely contested match with Burnley, following a draw with Fulham and a loss to the other big spenders, Arsenal.

“The Premier League is probably the best in the world, so if you have a lot of players who play well there, it’s normal that they are going to grow as players.” – Jan Vertonghen

Which of the big spenders will lead the EPL this season

Those big spenders will be keeping one eye on the Premier League and one eye on the UEFA Champions League as the draw was completed recently, and the teams involved can now begin planning for their European adventure. This season is promising to be one of the most entertaining in recent memory in the English Premier League. Liverpool has spent big to try to defend their EPL title, Manchester United is trying to find a return to form, and Arsenal has Eze on its side after masterminding a truly mesmerizing hijack of the transfer from Tottenham. With all those players donning new colors for this season, which among them will find their feet quickly and make good on their asking price by scoring some goals for their new clubs?
