Eric Morris hired to be head football coach at North Texas

North Texas announced on Tuesday the hiring of Washington State OC Eric Morris as the Mean Green’s new head football coach. Morris is a Littlefield, Texas native who played and coached at Texas Tech and had a four-year stint at the helm at FCS Incarnate Word before arriving at Wazzu last December.

“Among a deep and talented pool of candidates Eric distinguished himself with his great energy and strong track record as a championship head coach and a proven developer of talent,” AD Jared Mosley said in a statement. “As a Texas native, he has deep relationships across the state, and he understands the importance of connecting with campus and the local community.”

Morris went 24-18 at UIW, a Southland program in San Antonio, including a 10-3 record and Top 15 ranking in his fourth and final year with the program. Before that, he spent five seasons on the staff of alma mater Texas Tech (Co-OC for one year and OC for four). He was a WR/PR for the Red Raiders and late head coach Mike Leach from 2004-08.

“I am incredibly honored to be the head football coach at North Texas,” Morris said. “I am humbled and grateful for the opportunity given to me by Jared Mosley and President Smatresk to lead UNT Football into a new era in The American.  As a native Texan, I understand the pride and standard of Mean Green football and I am humbled to be able to lead this storied program. My wife, Maggie, and our boys are so excited to return home. We can’t wait to meet the team and get to work.”

North Texas parted ways with former head coach Seth Littrell last month after seven seasons with an even 44-44 record. The Mean Green will play Boise State in the Frisco Bowl this weekend, and then the program makes the move from Conference USA to the AAC starting in 2023.
